Frequently asked questions

What is an IBAN?

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. It's a standardized format (ISO 13616) that uniquely identifies a bank account across national borders. An IBAN contains a country code, check digits, and the domestic account details.

How does the checksum validation work?

The IBAN uses a MOD 97 algorithm. The first four characters are moved to the end, all letters are converted to numbers (A=10, B=11, etc.), and the resulting number must equal 1 when divided by 97. This catches virtually all transcription errors.

Can I validate non-SEPA IBANs?

Yes. This tool validates IBANs from 80+ countries worldwide, not just SEPA member states. The format and checksum validation works the same way regardless of whether the country is in the SEPA zone.

Is my IBAN data stored or sent anywhere?

No. The validation runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your IBAN never leaves your device — no server requests are made.

A valid IBAN doesn't mean the account exists, right?

Correct. IBAN validation only checks the format, length, and checksum. It cannot confirm whether the bank account actually exists or is active. For that, you would need to verify with the bank directly.
